  • Overhead Distribution C Lineperson

    A entry-level line worker that installs and fixes overhead distribution and transmission systems, which includes poles, cables, and electrical systems. Line Workers also fit, repair, and maintain underground cables and electrical equipment.

    Essential Functions & Responsibilities:

    • Installing transformers, lightning arresters, cutouts, cross arms insulators, switches, and switchgear.

    • Setting poles and anchors, stringing overhead wire, and proper sagging techniques.

    • Troubleshooting trouble in primary and secondary systems.

    • Replacing cutout fuses and clearing faulted circuits and systems.

    • Ability to problem solve with unidentified circumstances on any particular job.

    • Ensure daily testing and inspection of assigned tools and equipment.

    • Will have contact with public and private property owners to professionally communicate the work to be performed.

    • Maintain company equipment in a safe and efficient manner.

    • General duties related to the installation of overhead power supply.

    • Perform new construction, maintenance, or repair work of energized and de-energized overhead line work following company established Safety and Health standards.

    • All other duties as required or requested by Supervisors.

    • Reports all potential equipment and crew safety hazards to Foreperson.

    Minimum Qualifications

    • Must be 18 years of age or older.

    • Some proven previous Overhead Maintenance experience.

    • Must possess the ability, knowledge, or specific skill to:

    • work with energized high voltage systems

    • work with and around heavy equipment.

    • install and remove a service

    • tie in a primary conductor, phase a circuit through a substation, and identify induced voltage.

    • check the voltage on transformers, one shot on a recloser, and grounding procedures.

    • May possess:

    • knowledge of proper sagging techniques.

    • ability to identify primary and secondary voltage.

    • some understanding of flag and tag procedures.

    • ability to identify different materials used in line work.

    • ability to inspect/use proper cover-up.

    • bucket rescue know-how.

    • ability to climb different structures and possess the tools to do the climb.

    • ability to operate and service all required tools and equipment.

    • Must have some knowledge of:

    • Kellum grips and phasing sticks.

    • load break tool and reconductoring job.

    • trenching and shoring, rigging, hand lines, and lineman knot tying and making and using a hand line

    • assisting in hooking up single or three-phase transformers.

    • minimum approach distance.

    • safely installing and removing a mechanical jumper.

    • Ability to identify, operate and service all required tools and equipment. (i.e., bucket truck, digger derrick truck, tensioners, puller, rollers, hand tamp, chain saw, concrete saw, shovel)

    • Must be able to work long hours and overtime during holidays, emergencies, weekends, etc.

    Education & Experience:

    • Must have a minimum of 1+ years experience in the electrical power line construction industry.

    • Ability to provide proof of work experience, schooling, and other certifications obtained during career.

    Pre-Screen:

    • Upon offer, employees may be required to complete and pass a pre-employment drug screen, background, and/or MVR check.

    License & Certifications:

    • Driver License Required, willingness to obtain a valid CDL within 90 days of employment preferred.

    Travel Requirements

    • Willing to travel out of state for emergency storm work.

    Due to the inherently dangerous nature of the industry and requirements to work with or around hazardous equipment, employees must have sufficient eyesight to judge distance/coordination of equipment and tools, be able to maintain attention and concentration for extended periods, be able to withstand exposure to all kinds of weather while completing work assignments, be able to wear personal protective equipment as necessary, be able to enter and exit a vehicle numerous times a day, have the endurance necessary to traverse various terrain, be capable of performing job duties throughout a standard 8- or 10-hour day, be able to communicate with others, read, write, and comprehend written/verbal job instructions and information, and communicate and handle conflict professionally.
