    The Minnesota Department of Transportation, Metro District is hiring multiple, temporary, full-time, Laborer General positions to work for the summer season at the following truck station locations: Chaska, Eden Prairie Days, Forest Lake, Golden Valley, Golden Valley Traffic Services(Graffiti), Golden Valley Traffic Services, Hastings, Lakeville, Maple Grove Nights, Maplewood Bridge, Maryland Days, Mendota Days, Mendota Nights, North Branch, Oakdale Days, Oakdale Traffic Services and Shakopee. These positions will be responsible for assisting maintenance crews in performing roadside/roadway maintenance activities (vegetation control, pothole patching, guardrail repair, etc.), operating maintenance vehicles, performing routine equipment maintenance (calibrate, set up and adjust equipment, etc.), using basic hand tools, using computers for data entry and mobile/two-way radio systems.

    Shift Differential

    The shift differential for employees working on assigned shifts which begin before 6:00 A.M. or which end at or after 6:00 P.M. shall be two dollars and twenty-five cents ($2.25) per hour for all hours worked before 6:00 A.M. or after 6:00 P.M on that shift. Such shift differential shall be in addition to the employee's regular rate of pay and shall be included in all payroll calculations but shall not apply during periods of paid leave. An employee who requests and is approved by their supervisor to work before 6 A.M. or after 6 P.M., shall not be eligible for the shift differential.

    Minimum Qualifications

    • Read, write, speak, and understand the English language sufficient to understand oral and/or written direction; communicate with employees and the public in person or via two-way radio and other electronic devices.

    • Solve basic math problems.

    • Maintain routine written logs and simple records.

    • Perform manual labor work sufficient to complete assignments.

    • Endure extreme environmental conditions, such as heat, cold, rain, snow, and wind.

    • Must be 18 years of age or older by June 5, 2024

    Required License:

    • A valid Class D Driver's License with driving experience and a good driving record.

    Physical Requirements

    The physical demands of these positions will vary, but typically requires lifting 50-100 pounds maximum with frequent lifting and/or carrying of objects such as 50-pound bags. These positions may also require walking or standing to a significant degree on rough terrain or may involve sitting most of the time with pushing and pulling of arm and/or leg controls. These positions will require strenuous manual labor including but not limited to digging, shoveling, hauling, crawling, bending, pushing, pulling and climbing. In addition, these positions will require safe operation of small MnDOT equipment throughout the Metro District, such as a variety of small engine maintenance equipment.

    All job offers are contingent upon the candidate passing a Criminal Background Check, SEMA4 Records Check, Physical Exam, Employment Verification, Reference Checks and Driver's License Screening at the required level for the position with NONE of the following: a major traffic conviction in the past 5 years OR 4 or more minor violations OR 3 or more at-fault accidents in the last 3 years OR any combination of minor violations and at-fault accidents totaling 4 or more occurrences.
