This is a rural, alpine area approximately 2 hours from the Denver metropolitan area. The mine is at an altitude of approximately 10,200 feet. In the winter the average high temperature is 31 degrees and the average low is 3 degrees. In the summer the average high temperature is 71 degrees and the average low is 38 degrees. The average snowfall in Lake/Chafee counties is in excess of 200 inches per year. The median estimated house/condo value in 2005 in Leadville (Lake County) was reported to be $124,100. The median estimated house/condo value in 2005 in Buena Vista (Chaffee County) was reported to be $139,500.
Under general supervision completes logging of drill samples, conducts geologic mapping, completes resource block models, provides technical expertise, guidance and leadership in geological exploration and resource modeling. * Performs logging of core and reverse circulation drill cuttings and peer review evaluation Geologist I and II logging quality. * Supervises and directs drilling, road construction and drill sample preparation contractors. * Integrates and interprets all geological data (rock type, alteration, structure), assay, and mineralogical data into geologic maps and internally consistent cross sections and level plans. Provides coaching and mentoring of Geologist I and II to develop their skills. * Supervises a team of geologists in the completion of computerized resource block models that meet corporate modeling standards. * Prepares and updates drill hole database, maps of deposits and other exploration records. * Perform surface and underground geologic mapping * Works with metallurgists in providing samples for processing testing and evaluation and in the development of ore types. * Assists in the formulation of short-range plans and budget preparation for geological exploration and evaluation at assigned site. * Provides guidance and counsel to the site management team on applicable programs, practices and existing/proposed local, state and federal regulations. Maintains current working knowledge of applicable Federal, State and local regulations. * Perform other duties as requested. * Bachelor's degree in Geology or related scientific discipline and five (5) years experience in geology or related scientific field, OR * Master's degree in Geology and three (3) years experience in geology or related scientific field * Ability to correctly identify and accurately estimate relative proportions and textural characteristics of metal-bearing and gangue minerals in a production setting * Coaching experience with excellent and creative problem solving skills * Knowledge of the principles and methods used in complex geological analyses * Able to research and analyze information of considerable difficulty and draw valid conclusions * Ability to develop and maintain awareness of occupational hazards and safety precautions * Skilled in following safety practices and recognizing hazards * Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing Preferred Qualifications * Prior experience in the creation of resource block models which includes the practical application of basic geostatistical methods and detailed geologic modeling. * Practical modeling ability with MineSight® software. * Prior geologic modeling experience with porphyry copper-moly systems.
